Creating Geometric Tolerance Symbols

When you create geometric tolerance symbols, you work directly in the graphics area, and the interface guides you as you build feature control frames cell-by-cell.

With cell-specific context menus and on-screen handles, you can build complex feature control frames while keeping focus on the frame itself rather than a separate dialog box.

This video shows how to use handles and feature control frames to create a geometric tolerance symbol.

To create geometric tolerance symbols:

  1. Do one of the following:
    • For parts, click Geometric Tolerance (MBD Dimension toolbar) or Tools > MBD Dimension > Geometric Tolerance. See DimXpert for Parts Overview.
    • For drawings, click Geometric Tolerance (Annotation toolbar) or Insert > Annotations > Geometric Tolerance.
  2. In the graphics area, click to place the symbol.
A feature control frame appears with handles and a Tolerance dialog box surrounding it.

  3. Specify options in the Tolerance dialog box and the Geometric Tolerance PropertyManager.

  4. Click any handle surrounding the feature control frame to add more content.

Depending on the location of the handle, other options are available, such as:
    • Datum. Adds datum names and material condition symbols for the primary, secondary, and tertiary datums.

    • Indicator. Lets you add a border, tolerance, and datum reference to establish the orientation of the tolerance zone or zones.
    • New Frame. Creates additional frames.

    • Below Frame. Adds text below the frame.

    • Between. Specifies the labels of the points if the tolerance value applies between two points or entities.

    • From-To. Specifies the labels of the points if the tolerance value applies between from one point or entity to another.

    • Separate Requirement. Adds a SEP REQT label to the symbol.

    • Text Box. Lets you add text to the symbol.
  5. Click .
