Automatically Splitting Tables Horizontally at a Row

You can use the Horizontal Auto Split command to make the SOLIDWORKS software automatically adjust table rows when you add or remove items from tables.

Supported tables:

  • Hole Tables
  • Bill of Materials
  • General Tables

The automatic splitting of tables applies to the entire table, including portions that appear on other drawing sheets.

You can specify that the new table segments be placed directly below the last table split or directly to the right of the last table split:

Before split:
Drawing_horizontal_auto_split1
After split, placed below:
Drawing_horizontal_auto_split2
After split, placed to the right:
Drawing_horizontal_auto_split3

To set up automatic splitting of a table:

  1. Right-click the table and click Split > Horizontal Auto Split.
  2. In the dialog box, enter a number in the Maximum number of rows field.
  3. Under Apply, select one of the following:
    • To apply the Maximum number of rows value to the table once, click This time only.
    • To continuously maintain the automatic splitting of the table, click Continuously

As items are added and removed from the table, it is updated to remain in compliance with the Maximum number of rows value.

  4. Under Placement of new split tables, select one of the following:
    • To place the split portions of the table to the right, click Horizontal alignment.
    • To place the split portions of the table below, click Vertical alignment.
  5. Click Apply.
When Continuously is in effect for a table, to stop automatic splitting, right-click the table and click Stop Auto Splitting.

Current splits are kept but are no longer adjusted automatically as you make changes to the table.

Saving Horizontal Auto Split Settings

To save horizontal auto split settings in the table template:

  1. In the Horizontal Auto Split dialog box, under Apply, select Continuously.
  2. Click Apply.
When you save the table as a template, new tables created from the template preserve the horizontal auto split settings.
